## About Literature Abstract Translations

If your Vault is set up for translations, you can send non-English literature abstracts to your translation service provider, such as Amazon Translate, and have them translated into English.

SafetyDocs also automatically detects the language of literature abstracts and displays it on the related _Literature Article_ record, making it easier for you to identify if a translation is needed. Once the translation is complete, you can review it in your Vault to determine if there are any ICSRs to be processed or new Safety information to be recorded.

This centralized process for identifying translation needs and managing translations speeds up your literature review process and eliminates the need for external translation tools.

The following sections provide more details about the abstract translation process.

### Prerequisites

Before you can send literature abstracts for translation, you must ensure the following prerequisites have been met:

* Your Admin must fully configure this feature in your Vault. See Enable Literature Abstract Translation for more information.
* Your Admin must configure translation settings according to your organization's requirements, such as character limits and the number of articles that can be sent for translation over a certain period of time. See Configure Literature Abstract Translation Settings for more information.

## Send Literature Abstracts for Translation

When you upload a non-English literature article, SafetyDocs detects the language of its abstract and populates the _Abstract Language_ field on the related _Literature Article_ record. Based on this value, you can decide if you want to request a translation for the abstract.

You can send abstracts for translation in the following ways:

* To translate a single non-English abstract, select the **All Actions** menu on its _Literature Article_ record and then select **Translate Literature Abstract**.
* To translate the non-English abstracts of all the literature articles within a literature review at once, select the **All Actions menu** on the related _Literature Review_ record and then select **Translate Literature Abstracts**. This action will trigger a translation request for all abstracts in non-English languages that are on the Translation Connection Language list.

When these actions are selected, Vault sends a translation request to your translation service provider, and the selected _Literature Article_ records enter the _Abstract Translation Requested_ state.

It can take a few minutes for the translation to be processed, and you may need to refresh the page.

Once the translation is complete, the related literature articles enter the _Abstract Translation Complete_ state. The translated abstracts are imported to the _Abstract_ field of their respective _Literature Article_ records. You can now review the abstracts and take further action as necessary.

Note: When the translated abstracts are sent back to SafetyDocs, they are simply imported as received. The system does not perform quality checks on the content.

### Considerations for Abstract Translations

When using this feature, keep the following things in mind:

* If the length of the translated abstract exceeds the character limit of the _Abstract_ field in your Vault, the translated abstract is truncated to this field's maximum character length. You will receive a notification indicating which field was truncated.
* Your Admin sets up limits for the number of characters that can be sent for translation per request and the number of translation requests that can be sent per month. If either of these limits is exceeded, you will receive a notification indicating that your request cannot be processed.
* Once the translation request is sent, the translated abstract must return within 60 minutes, otherwise the task will fail. You will receive a notification indicating that the task timed out.
