# AS2 Connections Overview

Safety uses _AS2 Connections_ to connect Vault with external partner and health agency AS2 gateways. As described in <a href="/en/gr/01266/">Send a Gateway Transmission</a>, Vault can send Individual Case Safety Report (ICSR) _Transmissions_ electronically to destination organizations that provide a Gateway that supports the <a href="/en/gr/01301/#gateway-as2">AS2 protocol</a>.

_AS2 Connections_ provide the following features:

* Admin management of Internet Protocol (IP) lists
* Concise outbound IP lists
* <a href="/en/gr/872385/">Certificate Management</a>

      <p><strong>Note</strong>: 
Prior to 23R3, Safety used <em>Gateway Profiles</em> to submit electronic transmissions. <em>AS2 Connections</em> replace <em>Gateway Profiles</em>. Though <em>Gateway Profiles</em> are currently still supported, they will be deprecated in a future release. Consequently, we recommend replacing any <em>Gateway Profiles</em> in your Vault with an equivalent <em>AS2 Connection</em>. See <a href="/en/gr/01460/">Replace a Gateway Profile with an AS2 Connection</a> for instructions on how to do this.</p>

## Prerequisite

Your Admin must <a href="/en/gr/01459/">enable AS2 Connections</a>.

## Creating a Connection to an AS2 Gateway

For each connection between Safety and an AS2 gateway, you must create and configure the following:

* A _Connection_ of the _AS2 Connection_ type
* A _Transmission Profile_ of the _AS2 Gateway_ object type
