# Code Medical Device Information with JFMDA

To code medical device information reportable to the PMDA, Vault maps IMDRF codes to the corresponding Japan Federation of Medical Devices Associations (JFMDA) codes, ensuring accuracy when processing devices related to Japan domestic _Cases_ and foreign _Localized Cases_. When you select an IMDRF or JFMDA code on a Japan domestic _Case Product Device Code_, Vault populates the corresponding IMDRF and JFMDA field values to the related foreign _Localized Case Product Device Code_. Vault also populates or updates these field values whenever you create or update a _Case Product Device Code_.

## Prerequisites

To code JFMDA device data, your Admin must:

* Enable JFMDA Device Coding
* Manage the JFMDA Device Code Dictionary

## Code a Japanese Device {#code}

You can initiate device coding from a Japan domestic _Device_\-type _Case Product_ by selecting a code depending on the available device data. You can select:

* [An IMDRF code][1]
* [A JFMDA code][2]

If needed, you can:

* Select **Clear Selection** to remove all IMDRF and JFMDA device code details from both the _Case Product Device Code_ and the related _Localized Case Product Device Code_
* [Recode mismatched IMDRF-JFMDA mappings][3]
* [Update JFMDA codes][4] from a _Localized Case Product Device Code_

### Select an IMDRF Code {#select-imdrf-code}

To code a device using an IMDRF code:

1. Navigate to the relevant _Case_ and expand the **Device Codes** section.
2. Select the relevant _Case Product Device Code_.
3. Select **Edit**.
4. Select an IMDRF _Device Code Type_.
5. Select an IMDRF _Device Code_.
6. Select the relevant JFMDA _Level 1_, _Level 2_, and _Level 3_ codes, as applicable. Vault filters these options depending on the populated _JFMDA Device Code_.

Upon selecting the IMDRF _Device Code_, Vault populates the corresponding _JFMDA Device Code Type_ and any relevant JFMDA _Level 1_ through _Level 3_ codes, as applicable. If the selected IMDRF code corresponds to multiple JFMDA codes, Vault populates only the _JFMDA Device Code Type_ and filters the available options for the JFMDA _Level 1_ through _Level 3_ fields accordingly.

Upon saving the _Case Product Device Code_, Vault maps the selected JFMDA field values to the related foreign _Localized Case Product Device Code_ and populates the _JFMDA Device Code Status_ accordingly.

### Select a JFMDA Code {#select-jfmda-code}

To code a device using a JFMDA code:

1. Navigate to the relevant _Case_ and expand the **Device Codes** section.
2. Select the relevant _Case Product Device Code_.
3. Select **Edit**.
4. Select a _JFMDA Device Code Type_. Vault filters the available _JFMDA Device Code Type_ options based on the _JMDN Code_ on the related _Product Registration_ or _Product_.
5. Select the relevant JFMDA _Level 1_**,** _Level 2_, and _Level 3_ codes, as applicable.

Upon selecting the most specific JFMDA _Level 1_ through _Level 3_ code for the device, Vault populates the corresponding IMDRF _Device Code Type_ and _Device Code_.

Upon saving the _Case Product Device Code_, Vault populates the selected JFMDA field values on the related foreign _Localized Case Product Device Code_ and populates the _JFMDA Device Code Status_ accordingly.

### Recode Mismatched IMDRF-JFMDA Mappings {#recode}

When the IMDRF and JFMDA codes on a domestic _Case Product Device Code_ do not map to one another or when either maps to a deprecated code, Vault displays a _RECODE_ (Recode Tag) tag next to the relevant IMDRF or JFMDA code field. When this occurs, you can recode the _Case Product Device Code_ and its related _Localized Case Product Device Code_.

From the domestic _Case Product Device Code_, enter edit mode, then select a recoding option based on the cause of the mismatch:

* If the recoding issue is due to mismatched codes, select **Update Mapping**.
* If the recoding issue is due to a deprecated code, select **Clear Selection**, then code the correct code.

### Update a JFMDA Code From a Foreign Localized Case {#update-foreign-localized-case}

To update a JFMDA device code from a Japan foreign _Localized Case_:

**Note**: As Vault automatically populates JFMDA field values on foreign _Localized Cases_ whenever you code a device to the corresponding domestic _Case_, we only recommend this option when you need to update a specific JFMDA code level value when an IMDRF code maps to multiple possible JFDMA codes.

1. Navigate to the relevant _Localized Case_ and expand the **Localized Case Product Device Codes** section.
2. Select the relevant _Localized Case Product Device Code_.
3. Select **Edit.**
4. Select the relevant JFMDA _Level 1_**,** _Level 2_, and _Level 3_ codes, as applicable.
5. Select **Save**.

Upon saving the _Localized Case Product Device Code_, Vault maps the selected JFMDA field values to the related domestic _Case Product Device Code_ and populates the _JFMDA Device Code Status_ accordingly.
