# Merging Document Link Anchors

A single document page may have multiple anchor annotations on the same or adjacent text or area. Vault provides an option to merge some or all anchor annotations on a single page into one anchor. Doing so also updates existing references to target the newly merged anchor annotation. This is helpful when users have created redundant anchors on the same content.

To merge anchors:

1. Open a document with multiple anchors and click **View annotations** (<i class="far fa-comment-alt-plus"></i>) to enter _Annotate_ mode.
2. Open the <a href="/en/lr/9753/#annotate">annotation tools menu</a> on the document viewer toolbar and select **Merge Anchors** (<img class="inline" src="https://platform.veevavault.help/assets/images/platform_document_viewer_merge_anchors.png" alt="Merge anchors" style=" width: auto;" />).
3. Click and drag your cursor across the area of the document that contains the anchors you want to merge.
4. In the _Merge Anchors_ dialog, select a named anchor to merge other selected anchors with.
5. Use the checkboxes to select the anchors to merge. As you select anchors, Vault highlights them in the document viewer.
6. Click **Merge**. In the confirmation dialog, click **Continue** to merge the anchors.

## Related Permissions

To merge anchors on a document, you must have a security profile with the _Viewer Administration: Merge Anchors_ permission and have the _Annotate_ and _Create Anchors_ permissions on the document.
